Ceremonies, parades and other events are being held across the metro-east Monday to commemorate Memorial Day. Here’s a list of some of them:
▪ Belleville Memorial Day Parade — 10-11 a.m. Monday, May 30. Downtown Belleville. Parade starts at North 3rd Street at A Street to Walnut Hill Cemetery. belleville.net
▪ Belleville Memorial Day Ceremony — 11 a.m. Monday, May 30. Walnut Hill Cemetery, 1101 Mascoutah Ave., Belleville. All veterans, families and those who want to remember our fallen servicemen and women. All veteran organizations from the area are requested to join. Following the Belleville Memorial Day Parade.
▪ O’Fallon Memorial Day Event — 9-9:30 a.m. Monday, May 30. City of O’Fallon Cemetery, North Oak Street, O’Fallon. The program includes pre-ceremony music by the OTHS band, posting of the colors, national anthem, wreath laying, comments by O’Fallon Mayor Herb Roach, rifle gun salute, and taps. The speaker is Chief Master Sergeant (retired) Ken McQuiston. The public is invited to attend.
▪ Annual Troop 338 Memorial Day BBQ — 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, May 30. American Legion Hall, 509 Henry St., Prairie du Rocher. Includes pork steaks, brats, hot dog plates and sandwiches. Proceeds support Boy Scout Troop 338. facebook.com/PrairieDuRocherAmericanLegion
▪ Collinsville Memorial Day Service — 11 a.m. Monday, May 30. Collinsville VFW Post 5691, 1234 Vandalia St., Collinsville. The public is invited to honor our fallen soldiers. Light lunch to follow the service.
▪ Memorial Day Service — 11 a.m. Monday, May 30. American Legion Prairie Du Pont Post 485, 200 S. 5th St., Dupo. Hosted by American Legion Prairie Du Pont Post 485 and Chief Pontiac VFW Post 1699. 618-286-3535.
▪ Waterloo Memorial Day Ceremony — 11 a.m. Monday, May 30. Monroe County Courthouse Square, 100 S. Main St., Waterloo.
▪ O’Fallon Memorial Day Observance — 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 30. Veterans Monument, 737 E. Wesley Drive, O’Fallon. The guest speaker will be Major General Laura L. Lenderman, USAF, Air Mobility Command’s Director of Operations, Strategic Deference & Nuclear Integration. There will be participation from Colonel Phil Goodwin, USAF (Retired); the O’Fallon Township High School AFJ ROTC; VFW Post 805; Miss Athena King, OTHS Choir student, in addition to others. The names of the newly inscribed veterans will be introduced at this time. Pre-service music will begin at 11:15 a.m. Veterans are encouraged to wear their medals and decorations that day. Please bring your own lawn chairs and water. In case of inclement weather, the event will take place at the First Baptist Church, located at 1111 E. Highway 50 in O’Fallon.
▪ Co. A, 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment - Memorial Day — 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, May 30. Alton National Cemetery, 600 Pearl St., Alton. Members of the Re-Created Alton Jaeger Guard will portray members of the Alton Jaeger Guards, Company A. 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment as they would have appeared during the Shiloh Campaign in 1862. facebook.com/altonjaegerguard
