Mine subsidence causes partial closure of Illinois 15. Here’s where and for how long.
A roadwork project to patch and resurface 5.7 miles of Illinois 15 from Belleville to Freeburg is expected to be finished by the end of August.
In the meantime, a single lane of the state highway will be closed in both directions, according to Joe Gasaway, a supervisory field engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The work stretches from just east of the intersection of Illinois 159 in Belleville to Freeburg.
Kilian Corp. of Mascoutah was awarded a $4.9 million contract for the project, which began Friday.
Gasaway said the work will include fixing a “dip” in the highway caused by mine subsidence near the Green Mount Road intersection.
