Looking for gas under $5 for the Fourth? Here’s where fuel is cheapest in the metro-east
Illinois drivers hitting the road for Fourth of July weekend may be hard pressed to find gas under $5 at the pump – some are likely to pay closer to $6 per gallon – but a few southern Illinois counties were averaging lower as of Wednesday.
The state’s average cost per gallon of regular remains of the above the national average of $4.868 at $5.406, according to auto group AAA. Counties in the northern part of Illinois are seeing the highest prices, with Cook County averaging $5.849 a gallon.
But metro-east drivers willing to swing into Madison County may find it cheaper, with an average gallon of regular running you $4.934, as of Wednesday.

Illinois hit its highest recorded price for a gallon of regular June 13, at $5.562.
Those who venture across state lines to Missouri may find slightly better deals, with that state’s average at $4.578 for a gallon of regular, as of Wednesday.
Gas is highest in the counties around St. Louis, AAA shows, but is still cheaper than much of Illinois.

Fourth of July travel
AAA predicts 47.9 million Americans will hit the road and travel more than 50 miles from home this Fourth of July, and among them will be an estimated 2.6 million Illinoisans.
Road travel is also expected to hit record highs, with 42 million of those Americans traveling by car despite the pain at the pump.
Chicago was featured as a top domestic travel destination for the holiday weekend, according to AAA’s forecast.

We’ve rounded up the cheapest reported prices for gas as of June 29 for several metro-east counties. The data comes from GasBuddy, a crowd-sourcing app where consumers can report prices at the pump.

Monroe County: The Phillips 66 on Illinois 3 in Red Bud, $4.99

Randolph County: Casey’s on State Street in Chester, $4.89; the MotoMart on Holmes Street in Chester, also at $4.89
Bond County: The Love’s Travel Stop on State Street in Greenville, $4.99
Washington County: The Shell on Mockingbird Road in Nashville, Ill., $5.09
