Head-on crash with semitrailer in Clinton County kills two teens and their aunt
Two teenagers and their aunt were killed in a head-on crash with a semi tractor-trailer on Friday afternoon in Clinton County, according to authorities.
County officials declined to release the names of the 15-year-old and 17-year-old from Carlyle because they are minors. An obituary published Saturday identified them as sisters Savanna Broughton, 17, and Brooke-Lynn Broughton, 15.
The Clinton County coroner’s office identified their aunt as Rhonda Evans, 43, from Ackerman, Mississippi.
The 15-year-old, who had a learner’s permit, was driving the three of them on Old U.S. Highway 50 in a 2005 Audi passenger vehicle, according to a statement that Clinton County Sheriff Dan Travous issued on Friday.
Travous stated, based on reports from witnesses and physical evidence, that authorities believe the Audi crossed into the westbound lane on Highway 50 near Harper Street in Beckemeyer, causing a head-on collision with a Volvo semi tractor-trailer.
As of Friday, it was unclear why the Audi went into the westbound lane.
The driver of the semi tractor-trailer had minor injuries, according to the sheriff’s statement.
The funeral service for the sisters will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Carlyle. Visitation is from noon to 3 p.m. at the church.
