Small earthquake hits town in southern Illinois this weekend. Here’s what we know.

A small earthquake struck the residents of Benton in southern Illinois on Sunday, July 10.

No injuries or damages have been reported thus far. The town is located approximately 88 miles southeast of Belleville and is about 117 miles from the New Madrid fault line.

The United States Geological Survey recorded a 2.2 magnitude earthquake at 5:31 p.m Sunday in the town. They also reported the depth of the earthquake was about 1 mile under the surface. So far, seven people have responded on the government website regarding their experiences. It tracked the last 16 hours after the earthquake happened.

Smaller earthquakes happen in the Illinois Basin - Ozark Dome Region about one to two times annually, as reported by the USGS.
