Multi-vehicle crash shuts down portion of I-270 near Granite City, injuries reported
A multi-vehicle crash near Granite City has shut down traffic on Interstate 270.
The crash occurred at about 4:06 p.m. Monday near milepost 3 and Route 203. Multiple emergency agencies are at the scene including Arch medical helicopter.
The crash involves a semi tractor-trailer and five passenger vehicles, according to Illinois State Police.
The semi was traveling west on I-270 and struck a passenger vehicle, an ISP release stated. The truck left the road to the left and traveled through the center median cable wires and struck four more passenger cars, according to the release.
Three of the vehicles involved, including the tractor-trailer, ended up off the roadway and down an embankment.
Several people were transferred to area hospitals for treatment of injuries, the release said. The extent of the injuries are not currently known.
Interstate 270 eastbound is shut down, but traffic is being rerouted onto Illinois 3. Westbound traffic was moving slowly past the crash scene. At least one lane of eastbound traffic may be open soon, according to the release.
The crash remains under investigation.
