Where roads are closed due to flooding as southwestern Illinois gets more rain

Some southwestern Illinois roads closed Thursday as more rain fell in the region.

Here is a list of closures based on reports from local officials:

O’Fallon area

Main Street was closed at West Highway 50 in O’Fallon due to flooding, according to a St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency update from 4:06 p.m.

The city of O’Fallon said at 4:28 p.m. State Street was closed near Countryside Lane because of water in the road. The city previously said Highway 50 near Lawn Avenue was closed but quickly reported it had reopened.

Scott Air Force Base announced at 4:07 p.m. the Cardinal Creek Gate would be closed until further notice.

Belleville area

The St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency advised drivers to avoid Illinois 15 at Belleville West Parkway because both eastbound and westbound lanes were flooded as of 3:54 p.m.

The agency also said Illinois 163 at Clover Leaf in Stookey Township was impassable at 4:05 p.m.

East St. Louis

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced at 3:34 p.m. that northbound Interstate 55/70 was closed in East St. Louis due to flooding.

The state transportation agency said in a 4:51 p.m. update it would be reopening all lanes within 15 minutes because the pumps had caught up with the heavy rain.

“Please use caution in the E St. Louis area as traffic patterns return to normal,” the agency said on Twitter.

The St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency said at 4:07 p.m. the underpass at River Park Drive was also closed.

Fairview Heights

The Fairview Heights Police Department said at 3:04 p.m. that the following roads closed as a result of heavy rain:

  • Old Bunkum Road for about 200 feet east of North 89th Street
  • Holy Cross Road at the east end of Holy Cross Cemetery
