Downtown Belleville bank is closing its doors. This is where you’ll need to go
Update: The Associated Bank location in Fairview Heights is near St. Clair Square and not inside as previously reported.
An Associated Bank location in Belleville will permanently close this fall.
The bank branch at 100 E. Washington St. in downtown Belleville will close, effective 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, according to a notice posted at the location’s entrance.
In addition to the closing date, the notice refers area customers to Associated Bank locations at 6902 W. Main St., Belleville and 6550 N. Illinois St., Fairview Heights (near St. Clair Square).
A manager at the downtown location said in a phone call that the reason for the closure is because they “don’t have the foot traffic … [they] used to.”
After a brief phone call with Jennifer Kominski from Associated Bank’s public relations team, the following statement was provided in an email:
“On Aug. 19, 2022, Associated Bank announced its intent to consolidate seven branches in Wisconsin and six in Illinois. The consolidations align with an industry-wide trend, which includes consumers adaption to digital banking, a smaller branch footprint and lower frequency of walk-in traffic. Associated will work with impacted colleagues to find a new role within the company, where positions are available.”
The 13 branches will close Nov. 18.
The statement also stated that the downtown Belleville branch would be consolidated with the West Main Street location.
Associated Bank closed 13 locations in Wisconsin and Illinois in 2021, including a branch at 304 Bargraves Blvd. in Troy, according to a list of 2021 openings and closings on the Associated Bank website.
A September 2020 story by the Milwaukee Business Journal reported that the Green Bay-based Associated Bank would close 14 branches by the end of that year.
The reason for the closures given by the bank at that time was due to the increased use of digital banking and less walk-in customers.
A list of 2020 openings and closings on the bank’s website shows that 19 branches were closed in December 2020. Ten other branches closed earlier that year, including a location at 7301 St. James in Edwardsville.
