Which Belleville grocery store is the cheapest for popular items? See prices compared

Grocery prices are up 13.1% across the U.S. from July 2021 to July 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index. July was the most recent month for which data were available, and the value is not seasonally adjusted.

Cereals and bakery products are up 15%, the federal agency says, and dairy and related products weren’t far behind with a 14.9% hike. Prices of non-alcoholic beverages and beverage materials have increased by 13.8%, and fruits and vegetables are 9% more expensive than they were in July 2021.

With grocery bills increasing, many consumers are likely looking for ways to help ease costs and mitigate inflation. Here’s an item-by-item comparison of online grocery prices for Walmart, Aldi, Schnucks and Target in southwest Illinois. Prices for Aldi and Schnucks are sourced from InstaCart, and actual costs may vary based on how you buy.

Costs of popular grocery items

Dozen eggs

A dozen Grade A large eggs from Target’s Good & Gather brand will run you $2.19, and 12 Goldenhen Grade A large eggs cost $1.65 at Aldi. A dozen Great Value Large White eggs is $2.13 at Walmart (Walmart’s website notes prices may vary online, in stores and on the company’s app.), and a package of 12 Grade A large eggs costs $2.39 at Schnucks.

Loaf of bread

A 20-ounce loaf of white bread is $2.72 at Walmart, $1.19 at Schnucks and Target and $1.09 at Aldi.

Gallon of milk

A gallon of 2% milk costs $2.48 online from Walmart. Schnucks charges $2.89 for a gallon of 2% milk, while it costs $2.75 at Aldi. Target prices a gallon of milk at $2.59 in Belleville.

Chicken

A 36-ounce package of boneless, skinless chicken breast is on sale for $11.99 ($5.33 per pound) and regularly priced at $15.99 at Schnucks. A 4.75lb package of Kirkwood Fresh Family Pack Chicken Breasts is about $12.78 at Aldi ($2.69 per pound), though the final cost is determined by weight.

Good & Gather boneless, skinless chicken breasts are $3.99 per pound at Target and chicken breasts are about $3.24 per pound at Walmart.

Frozen pizza

Jack’s thin-crust frozen cheese pizza (13.8 ounces) is $3.62 at Walmart, and the same pizza costs $3.89 at Target. Mama Cozzi’s original thin-crust cheese pizza is $3.65 at Aldi, and a 14.5-ounce Jack’s thin-crust frozen cheese pizza is $4.59 at Schnucks.

Granola bars

Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bars in Oats ‘N Honey is $2.98 for a six-count (or 12 bars) at Walmart, while the same snack costs $3.19 at Target and $4.19 at Schnucks (though there is a buy two, save 50 cents promotion at Schnucks right now). Millville Oats and Honey Crunchy Granola Bars are $1.89 for a 6-count at Aldi.

Coffee

A 25.9-ounce canister of Folgers Classic Roast Ground Coffee (medium roast) is $10.24 at Walmart and $10.59 at Target. You can get a 30.5-ounce container of Beaumont Classic Roast Ground Coffee for $7.69 at Aldi, and 25.4 ounces of Folgers Coffee is $11.99 at Schnucks.

What grocery store is the most popular in Illinois?

Walmart is the most-visited grocery store in Illinois, according to the latest numbers from Safe Graph, a company that uses anonymous mobile data. The chain had more than 3.5 million visitors in the state in July 2022, and Aldi was the runner-up with 643,050 visitors.
