Here’s what we know about the closing of Bed Bath & Beyond store in Fairview Heights
So the word is out that Bed Bath & Beyond in Fairview Heights is closing.
I guess it’s a good thing I already have the essentials at home.
When this particular location opened in 1998, it was the store to go to. At that time, I had friends and classmates who were preparing to move into college dorms and first apartments.
Bed Bath & Beyond had everything they needed.
Alas, nothing lasts forever.
I called Paul Ellis, director of Economic Development for Fairview Heights, to ask if news of the closure was a surprise to him.
“No, not at all,” said Ellis. “We have been working with the brokers for that site” to find a new tenant.
He said they do have potential tenants lined up for the location at 6611 N. Illinois St. and are already looking at plans.
(I’ll have more on that when things are settled.)
Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. announced in August plans to close around 150 of its lower-producing stores and cut 20% of its work force as part of an effort to reduce costs.
“It’s always changing in the retail environment,” said Ellis.
“It’s unfortunate when any store closes,” Ellis continued, and as most people come [to Fairview Heights] to shop, it’s constantly changing.
An official closing date for the Bed Bath & Beyond’s Fairview Heights location was not immediately available. Five other Illinois stories are also on the list of initial closings. They are located in Carbondale, Schaumburg, Gurnee, Bourbonnais and Joliet.
I contacted the Fairview Heights store but was referred to the corporate office.
I’m still waiting to hear back from the Bed Bath & Beyond media relations team to get a closing date.
And any word of sales that might be coming soon.
Stay tuned.
