Two people in SUV killed in collision with tractor-trailer in Madison County
An early morning traffic crash Wednesday involving a semitractor-trailer and an SUV claimed the lives of two people near Hamel in Madison County.
The Madison County Coroner’s Office said no information will be released about the victims until family notification is completed.
Illinois State Police District 11 is handling the investigation of the wreck.
The agency released information saying the accident occurred at the intersection of Illinois 4 and Illinois 140 at 7:56 a.m.
According to preliminary information developed by state police crash scene investigators, a semitractor-trailer was traveling south on Illinois 4 near Illinois 140 and an SUV was traveling west on Illinois 140.
The truck failed to stop at the intersection, which has a flashing red light and a stop sign, and struck the passenger side of the SUV, killing the two occupants inside, police said. The victims were pronounced deceased on the scene.
The driver of the truck refused medical attention.
It was not immediately known where the trucker was from or where he was going. Also, officials haven’t said where the deceased people are from or where they were traveling.
Illinois State Police said their investigation is ongoing and no further information will be released at this time.
