A woman was hospitalized and her mobile home destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon on Holly Drive in Belleville.

According to Northwest St. Clair County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Chester Borkowski, the first responding firefighters were dispatched at 1:10 p.m. and arrived to see heavy fire spewing from the front door of the mobile home. Borkowski said crews attempted to make an interior attack on the fire but it spread too quickly and they backed out to a defensive position after determining no one was inside.

The woman was able to escape before firefighters arrived. She was not identified.

Borkowski said firefighters were able to quickly control the fire after initially backing out. He said the single occupant of the mobile home was transported to a hospital for treatment of superficial burns.

Belleville and Signal Hill crews assisted in the firefight while Swansea and Villa Hills crews covered responding crews’ stations. The fire remains under investigation and Borkowski said the State Fire Marshal’s office has been summoned.

There are two Holly Drives in Belleville. The street where the mobile home burned Wednesday is off South 15th Street between South Belt West and Illinois 15.
