A new store concept from the folks at Dollar General is coming to Fairview Heights.

Popshelf will reside at 6101 N. Illinois St., the former home of Pier 1 Imports.

This concept is “doing well across the nation and … will be the first in the St. Louis region,” wrote Fairview Heights Director of Economic Development Paul Ellis in an email to the News-Democrat.

“I think people are really gonna like it,” said Ellis in a phone interview.

He said the Fairview Heights store is the first of maybe three stores that will open in the area.

Ellis shared news of the new Fairview Heights store this week on the Fairview First Facebook page, stating that construction to the site will be completed this month.

An Oct. 8, 2020, release on the Popshelf website stated that the aim of the concept was to “engage customers with a fun, affordable and stress-free shopping experience where they can find on-trend seasonal and home décor, health and beauty must-haves, home cleaning supplies, party goods, entertaining needs and much more.”

The release also stated that about 95% of the store’s items will be priced at $5 or less.

A response to an email inquiry sent to Popshelf’s public relations team revealed that an official opening timeline has not yet been confirmed.

However, Ellis said that work on the building’s interior is nearly complete, and the store should be open in a few weeks.

Dollar General first introduced Popshelf in October 2020.

The first two Popshelf stores opened in Tennessee in July 2021. Missouri’s first location opened in Springfield last month. Popshelf also has locations in 10 other states.

More information about the new Fairview Heights store will be reported as it becomes available.
