Two men, including one who had been shot, were seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash in Madison on Friday, the fire chief said.

One of the victims was flown to St. Louis University Hospital in a helicopter and the other victim was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, according to Madison Fire Department Chief Dave Klee.

The men were in a car that crashed into a tree at about 5:45 p.m. at the intersection of 10th Street and Washington Avenue, Klee said.

“While on scene, officers discovered evidence that there may have been gunshots fired prior to or after the crash,” Police Chief Jeffery Bridick said in a news release on Saturday night.

Also, someone had called the police to say they had heard gunshots before the crash, Bridick said.

“At this time, investigators have identified potential persons of interest and (are) attempting to contact them for further information,” he said. “Due to the ongoing investigation, we will not be releasing any further information at this time.”

Bridick said the names and nature of the injuries of the victims will not be released. However, he said the driver, who had to be extricated from the car by firefighters, suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to the hospital.

Bridick asked that anyone who has information relating to this incident to contact the Madison Police Department at 618-876-4300.
