A metro-east woman died at a local hospital following a head-on crash in Fairview Heights Monday.

Police arrived at the 9600 block of Old Lincoln Trail at about 3 p.m. to find the drivers of a passenger vehicle and a pickup truck with injuries.

Officers attempted life-saving measures on the woman, who St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. identified Tuesday as Deshayla Waller, 22, of 76th Street in Belleville. She was transported to Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 8 p.m.

The driver of the other vehicle was awake and talking to police at the scene, according to a release from the Fairview Heights Police Department. He was transported by EMS to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the release stated.

A Fairview Heights Detective, who specializes in crash reconstruction, was called to the scene. The investigation as to its cause is ongoing.
