Granite City High School staff called police when fights broke out between students

Police responded to Granite City High School on Wednesday during the school day when two fights broke out between students in a hallway, according to officials.

Granite City District 9 Superintendent Stephanie Cann sent a letter to families Wednesday saying school officials were working with police to identify the students involved and prevent further incidents.

Cann’s letter stated that teachers kept students in their classrooms until dismissal as a safety precaution. The letter did not include details about what happened, only that an incident occurred and police responded to the school.

The superintendent sent a follow-up letter Thursday clarifying what happened and addressing rumors about it. She stated the two altercations happened at the same time, and school staff needed additional help from police to respond to it.

The incident did not involve weapons, Cann stated.

“The situation was resolved quickly due to the response of GCHS teachers, staff, and the Granite City Police Department,” Cann stated in the follow-up letter.

Maj. Nick Novacich, the assistant police chief in Granite City, said officers issued citations to students as a result of the fights.

Novacich declined to provide additional details, including how many students were fighting or how many of them received citations, because they are juveniles.
