Interstate 55 south of Springfield reopened to traffic Tuesday morning after six people died in crashes caused by a dust storm on Monday.

“Interstate 55 around milepost 76, both northbound and southbound, opened around 6 a.m. today after being closed due to massive crashes due to zero visibility conditions caused by blowing dust,” Illinois State Police said in a Facebook post.

The crashes occurred in Montgomery County near Farmersville.

The dust storm occurred when there were high winds Monday morning after farmers in the region had been plowing their fields and there had not been rain in recent weeks.
