Belleville man killed in crash on U.S. Highway 50 in O’Fallon

A 65-year-old Belleville man died Friday afternoon in a car crash on U.S. Highway 50 in O’Fallon.

The O’Fallon Police Department identified the man as Michael J. Theiss III in a news release on Friday night.

Authorities believe Theiss was driving east on U.S. 50 near Memory Lane and struck a van that was turning left into the westbound lane, according to the release, which cited preliminary investigative findings.

Police did not identify the driver of the van, a 29-year-old man from Belleville. The release stated the van driver was injured in the crash and was transported from the scene by ambulance.

O’Fallon police, fire and EMS responded to the area, the 8600 block of U.S. 50, at 1:15 p.m. Friday. The road was closed for several hours while the Metro East Crash Assistance Team and Illinois State Police conducted a crash reconstruction.
