Waterloo Queen of Hearts drawing growing again. How high can the jackpot get this time?
The jackpot for the Queen of Hearts raffle game in Waterloo for the benefit of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School is growing again.
Earlier this year, downtown streets filled with thousands hoping to win the prize, which grew week after to week to nearly $2 million.
The next drawing is expected to be at 7 p.m. Tuesday when players will be seeking a jackpot building off the $289,960 jackpot that was announced last week.
“The Queen of Hearts is still hiding,” the school’s announcement said.
But don’t expect another millionaire. Raffle organizers have said on Facebook that this game of Queen of Hearts would have a jackpot limit of $500,000.
In January, a retired ironworker from Red Bud won a jackpot of nearly $1.9 million.
Sts. Peter and Paul Principal Lori Matzenbacher could not be reached for comment about this week’s drawing and how the school plans to spend its share of the proceeds.
In the Queen of Hearts game, the person whose raffle number is selected gets to pick a playing card sealed on a poster board. If the person selects the Queen of Hearts, the contestant wins the jackpot.
You don’t have to be present to win if your raffle number is drawn. However, a game moderator will pick a playing card for you and if the Queen of Hearts is selected, you only win half of the jackpot and the other half goes toward building the next jackpot.
If any other card is selected, the game continues for another week to the next drawing and the jackpot grows with new raffle ticket sales.
Players have to be pre-registered to buy tickets but new registrations for this Queen of Hearts contest closed on Oct. 24, according to a posting on the group’s Facebook page. Raffle tickets cost $1.
Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School gets 20% of the ticket sales and the rest of the money goes to the jackpot.
The drawings are usually conducted on Tuesday nights at the Outsider pub at 104 S. Market St. in Waterloo.
