Cason among 18 applicants for her former judgeship
LaNinya Cason is one of 18 metro-east lawyers who have applied for the vacant associate judge slot on the 20th Judicial Circuit in St. Clair County that was created when the county’s circuit judges voted not to retain her last month.
Besides Cason, the list of applicants includes:

- Christie R. Schmieder
- Levander Smith, Jr.
Associate judges are selected by circuit judges, who are elected by voters. The circuit judges also vote every four years on the retention of associate judges. An associate judge must receive at least 60 percent “yes” votes from the circuit judges in order to be retained.
