Belleville man dies after being struck by a vehicle in Fairview Heights, police said

A Belleville man died early Sunday after being struck by a vehicle in Fairview Heights.

Jeremy Gunter, 48, was identified as the victim, according to a release from Fairview Heights Police Chief Steve Johnson.

Officers responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle near St. Clair Avenue at 3rd Avenue around 1:10 a.m., the release states. They found Gunter severely injured and immediately began treating him for his wounds before he was taken to Belleville Memorial Hospital.

“ Despite efforts to save Gunter’s life, he succumbed to his injuries,” the release states. “ It is believed he had just left from the last Metro Train at its end point. “

Gunter was pronounced dead at 2:06 a.m., according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

Witnesses said Gunter was struck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross the roadway, according to a preliminary investigation by the Fairview Heights Police Department and Metro East Traffic Crash Assistance Team, the release states.

No others were injured.

The investigation is continuing.
