East Alton pedestrian struck and killed on Illinois 140
A pedestrian was struck and killed on College Avenue Monday morning, according to Alton police.
About 9:07 a.m. Monday, a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze was traveling eastbound on Illinois 140, otherwise known as College Avenue. Just east of Powder Mill Road, the car allegedly struck and killed Lester W. Anderson, 61, of East Alton, according to Alton police. It was not immediately known if Anderson was walking alongside the roadway or crossing the street.

Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene about 9:54 a.m., according to the Madison County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is planned for Tuesday to assist in the investigation.
The driver, whose identity was not released, is cooperating with the investigation, according to police.
The incident is being investigated by Alton police, the Metro-East Crash Assistance Team and the Madison County Coroner’s Office. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call Alton Police Sgt. Mark Dorsey at 463-3505, ext. 241.
Once the investigation is complete, police said, the case will be presented to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether any charges will be filed.
Funeral arrangements for Anderson are pending.
