Coroner releases identity of Granite City man killed in crash
A 48-year-old Granite City man died when his SUV left the roadway and hit an overpass in Granite City, the Madison County coroner said Wednesday.
Robert D. Wallace was pronounced dead at the scene on Monday night, Coroner Steve Nonn said in a news release.
Wallace was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse south on Nameoki Road, which is also known as Illinois 203, and for unknown reasons left the roadway and hit the West Pontoon Road overpass, the release stated.
First-responders were called at 6:09 p.m. Monday and made “heroic life-supportive” efforts as they tended to Wallace, Nonn said.
Wallace, who was not wearing a seat belt, died as a result of blunt chest trauma, according to a preliminary investigation cited by Nonn.
Along with the coroner’s office, the crash is being investigated by the Granite City Police Department and the Metro East Crash Assistance Team.
Irwin Chapel in Granite City is handling funeral arrangements.
