A 26-year-old St. Louis man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer truck on Interstate 55 in Madison County shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Illinois State Police agents are investigating.

A state police news release said the victim, Devin C. Smart, of St. Louis, exited his vehicle and was walking on the shoulder of the highway. For an unknown reason, he entered the roadway and was struck by a truck-tractor semi-trailer.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene near mile marker 8.1 in Collinsville at about 12:14 p.m., according to a release from Madison County Coroner Nicholas Novacich’s office.

As the ISP investigation is open and active, there is no further information to report at this time, the ISP news release said.
