Scouts collecting shoes for needy
In honor of National Service Day on Sept. 11, the Belleville-based Lewis & Clark Council of the Boy Scouts of America will host a Soles4Souls used shoe drive with a goal of collecting 50,000 pairs of shoes for the needy.
In addition to the Scouts collecting shoes, the public is invited to bring donations to the Lewis & Clark Council office at 335 W. Main St. in Belleville on Sept. 11 or in the few days leading up to the event.

Mall adds kids play area
St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and Home Care Southern Illinois together will unveil a new play area at St. Clair Square in Fairview Heights on Friday.
The 1,000-square-foot play area includes colorful climbing structures and will be free for kids to play on following the 10 a.m. unveiling. Hospital Sisters Health System, which runs the two health facilities, also will provide free information and health screenings as part of the event.
The unveiling will be at Center Court in the mall.
