Metro-east coroner IDs bicyclist hit by a tow truck

A 22-year-old Fairmont City man lost his life when he was struck by a tow truck while riding his bicycle on Collinsville Road near Illinois 203 in St. Clair County early Friday morning.

Thomas S. Ripley of the 3700 block of Cookson Road in Fairmont City was identified as the victim by St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

Ripley was pronounced deceased at the scene at 1:35 a.m., Dye said.

A tow truck driver and the bicyclist were traveling west in the left lane on Collinsville Road when the tow truck struck the bicyclist, Illinois State Police said in a news release.

The roadway was temporarily closed down for a crash investigation, which is being handled by Illinois State Police.

No further information about the collision was available to be released, according to Illinois State Police.
