A 34-year-old Germantown who was working on scaffolding in Alhambra died Thursday when he came into contact with live power lines.

Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn said Geoffrey L. Walthes was at a worksite at East Main Street and Wall Street when he made contact with the power line Thursday morning.

Nonn said Walthes fell to the ground after his body made contact with the power line.

Alhambra Fire Department and Alhambra-Hamel Emergency Medical Service were called to the scene at 9:19 a.m. and provided emergency care. Walthes was taken to the emergency department of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, where he was pronounced dead at 10:38 a.m.

An autopsy was planned for later Friday to further clarify the cause of death. Routine toxicology testing for the presence of alcohol and drugs were also to be performed. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified and is investigating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Nordike Funeral Home.
