A man fell from a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 64 in East St. Louis Wednesday. He sustained injuries and was taken to an area hospital for evaluation, police said.

Information on the extent of his injuries was not immediately available but he was conscious and breathing when an ambulance arrived. The man’s name was not released.

“A male subject was hanging on the outside rail of the walkway on the east side of I-64. When officers got there, he let go and hit the ground on the side of the highway,” Police Chief Kendall Perry said.

Perry shared what he had been briefed on by his officers, who are investigating what led to the man falling from the bridge late Wednesday morning.

The victim was taken to St. Louis University Hospital for evaluation, Perry said.

There was no further information to be released, he said.
