Swansea woman identified as victim in fatal head-on crash on U.S. 50
A 65-year-old woman from Swansea died in a head-on crash Monday in Clinton County, the coroner said Tuesday.
Margaret Smith was pronounced deceased at 1:43 p.m. at the scene on U.S. 50 at St. Rose Road, according to Coroner Phillip Moss.
An eastbound Chevrolet SUV crossed over into the westbound lane and onto the shoulder of U.S. 50 before it swerved back into the eastbound lane and struck a Chrysler minivan head on, according to an Illinois State Police news release Monday night. The crash happened at about 12:38 p.m., the release said.
Smith was a passenger in the minivan, Moss said.
The drivers of the two vehicles were transported by helicopter to a regional hospital.
No other information about the crash was available to be released, state police said.
Moss said he does not have information about which funeral home would be handling services for Smith.
