One person killed in early morning crash near Millstadt

One person died in a single-car crash early Saturday morning on Illinois State Route 163 near Millstadt.

A Toyota traveling southbound on Illinois 163 just before 5 a.m. left the road and struck a tree near Cemetery Road, according to a preliminary investigation by Illinois State Police.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Clair County coroner. The person’s identity has not been released.

There were no other occupants in the car.

State police said in a news release Saturday that they do not know why the car left the road.

Illinois 163 was shut down around 5:46 for the crash investigation. All lanes reopened by 9:15 a.m.
