Fiery crash leaves one dead, one injured on metro-east highway, state police say

One person died and another person was injured in a fiery collision between a pickup truck and a semi-truck on Sunday on Interstate 55 in Madison County, Illinois State Police said.

The deceased victim’s name has not been released as investigators are awaiting confirmation of the person’s identity, the Madison County Coroner’s Office said Monday.

Illinois State Police Troop 8, which is based in Collinsville, was called to investigate a two-vehicle crash at about 3 a.m. Sunday on northbound I-55 south of Fairmont Avenue at milepost 8 in Collinsville, according to a state police news release.

The crash involved a pickup truck and a semi-truck.

“Both vehicles caught fire after impact,” according to the news release. “The driver of the semi was transported to a regional hospital with injuries. The driver of the pickup was declared deceased.”

The northbound lanes remained closed until 10:26 a.m. Sunday. No other information about the crash was released.
