The Maryville woman who died after being shot by an Illinois State Police trooper is being remembered by her family as a “devoted mother.”

Rachel E. Tarrence, 40, died on Jan. 4 after she struck an ISP squad car in East St. Louis and then drove toward a trooper who shot her, authorities said.

A spokesperson for Illinois State Police said Monday the investigation into Tarrence’s death is still ongoing.

Tarrence “loved taking care of others,” according to her obituary posted by Wojstrom Funeral Home & Crematory in Granite City.

Tarrence’s survivors include a daughter and two sons.

“She was a loving and devoted mother,” the obituary states. “Her and the children enjoyed going out to eat, going to the park or shopping for the newest toys or trending clothes.

“She also was an avid cook and loved taking pictures of her dishes. Most importantly, she loved God.”

A funeral service was not listed in the obituary.
