Monday is Presidents Day. What’s open and what’s not in the metro-east?
Monday, Feb. 16 is Presidents’ Day, which was initially established to mark George Washington’s birthday, and is still celebrated as a federal holiday in Illinois and nationally.
Most major grocery store chains will be open regular hours on Presidents Day. Shoppers are encouraged to confirm hours with their local store, as exceptions may apply.
Some services and schools will close in observance of the holiday. . All U.S. post offices will be closed, and regular mail delivery will be suspended Monday. Some self-service kiosks will be available.
Presidents’ Day is considered a bank holiday. Most banks, including Chase and Bank of America, will be closed.
Belleville trash service will run normally for Presidents’ Day. However, sanitation schedules change for other holidays such as Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Federal courts, Belleville city offices and the Belleville Public Library, will be closed Monday.
Belleville Township High School District 201 will close for Presidents’ Day, as will Belleville School District 118, Wolf Branch School District, Fairview Heights’ Grant Middle School and Illini Elementary school and others.
MetroBus and MetroLink transit will operate on normal schedule for Presidents Day. On some other holidays, those services run on a weekend schedules.

Presidents’ Day may not be a holiday widely celebrated with family traditions and favorite recipes, but when will the rest of 2026’s federal holidays fall? Here’s the schedule:
- Memorial Day: Monday, May 25
- Juneteenth National Independence Day: Friday, June 19
- Independence Day (observed): Friday, July 3
- Labor Day: Monday, Sept. 7
- Indigenous Peoples’ Day or Columbus Day: Monday, Oct. 12
- Veterans Day: Wednesday, Nov. 11
- Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, Nov. 26
- Christmas Day: Friday, Dec. 25
