Authorities release ID of man who died after crashing into Edwardsville building

Illinois State Police released the identity of the person who died after they crashed into Redmon Insurance Agency in downtown Edwardsville during a police pursuit.

Ryan C. Drew, a 24-year-old from Hamel, was fleeing SIUE police officers after they attempted to stop the Chevrolet truck Drew was driving at approximately 11:10 p.m. Sunday, a news release from the Illinois State Police says.

According to the release, the truck was being driven unsafely on New Poag Road and then traveled the wrong way on SIU Northern Access Road. SIUE police attempted to stop the truck, but it sped away. Drew continued to speed through Edwardsville and ultimately lost control of the truck and crashed into the building, the release said. No officers were injured.

Drew was pronounced dead at the scene by the Madison County coroner. Illinois Route 159 was closed while the scene was investigated, the release said.

Illinois State Police are investigating the incident. The release said the Madison County state’s attorney’s office will review the case once Illinois State Police finish their investigation.
