Woman walking dog fatally struck by car in St. Clair County, authorities say

A woman walking her dog was hit and killed by a vehicle on Illinois 159 Saturday evening, Illinois State Police confirmed.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. identified the woman as Shannon Duff, 44, of Caseyville. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle also was injured and was taken to a local hospital. The dog was taken to an emergency veterinarian, according to a State Police news release.

Illinois State Police troopers were dispatched to Illinois 159 at Hollywood Heights Road in Caseyville at about 8:57 p.m. Saturday. According to a preliminary investigation, a northbound passenger car struck Duff and the dog. The northbound lanes of Illinois 159 were shut down until about 1 a.m. as troopers investigated.

The conditions of the car’s driver and the dog were not known to authorities as of Monday morning.
