Three confirmed dead after explosion, house fire in Troy
Multiple public safety and law enforcement agencies — including the Madison County Coroner, FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives — are investigating an explosion and fire at a home near Troy late Sunday night.
Three people are confirmed dead in the fire, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.
Firefighters arrived at the scene in the 8000 block of West Kirsch Road, just west of O’Fallon-Troy Road, in response to multiple 911 emergency calls reporting a loud explosion. Crews arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames, according to the Troy Fire Department.
Upon arrival, one person was located with significant burn injuries and was later transported to a St. Louis-area hospital, the sheriff’s department said in a release. Firefighters later discovered three people dead inside.
Others escaped the home without significant injuries, the release stated.
Firefighters from Maryville and O’Fallon assisted in extinguishing the fire, which later reignited Monday morning.
By 6:30 a.m., FBI, ATF, Bomb Squad and the Illinois State Fire Marshal arrived at the scene, in addition to the Madison County Sheriff and coroner’s office.
On Tuesday, the Illinois Secretary of State Bomb Squad conducted “controlled detonations of several devices” southeast of Troy as part of the investigation, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said.
“This will be conducted throughout the day at two separate locations southeast of Troy,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “Many emergency vehicles will be present.”
The location of the detonations was not released.
