Traffic remained backed up on Interstate 64 and adjoining roadways Thursday morning, disrupting the morning rush hour, hours after a semi-truck struck a highway sign, causing it to collapse across the highway.

Westbound I-64 approaching the I-255 exit was closed as Illinois Department of Transportation crews worked to clear the remains of the sign, which spanned four lanes of I-64 near Exit 7. The interstate was reopened at about 12:15 p.m.

Illinois State Police, which rerouted traffic to Illinois 157 at Caseyville, said the truck driver did not lower its dump bed, which caused it to hit the sign and break the supportive truss in the middle.

State police confirmed there were no injuries.

“Expect major delays this morning, so if you can, try to steer clear of the area,” IDOT said in a release.

According to IDOT, the sign collapsed around 11:45 p.m., shutting down both lanes of I-64 overnight. At 9 a.m., traffic remained backed up more than 7 miles from I-255 past Illinois 159 in Fairview Heights.
