If you’re considering a job in the public sector, the Illinois state government is hiring for more than 330 open positions statewide, including at least 45 in the metro-east.

Unemployment has seen a slight increase in Illinois recently, rising from 4.7% to 4.9% from December to January, the most recent months for which preliminary data is available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

From customer service jobs to positions in maintenance, there are a variety of listings available from the state. Here’s what to know about Illinois state government positions available in the metro-east. Four out of these five listings do not list a college degree as a requirement for applicants, although job experience may be required.

Maintenance equipment operator

Agency: Department of Human Services

Wage: $6,832 to $8,634 per month

Location: Alton

Application deadline: Tuesday, April 21

Minimum qualifications for this position include “knowledge, skill and mental development” equivalent to completion of high school and one year of experience performing a variety of semiskilled mechanical and manual tasks in the maintenance and operations of automotive or related maintenance equipment, the listing says.

Job responsibilities include, according to the listing:

  • “Drives vehicles to transport forensic (95%) and civil (5%) patients to and from scheduled appointments, such as doctor visits, court appearance and drives discharged patients to specified discharge location.
  • Operates truck and delivers food to both civil (25%) and forensic (75%) living units.
  • Loads, unloads, and delivers equipment, general office supplies and personnel throughout the hospital grounds.
  • Assists in the maintenance and minor repair of equipment.
  • Washes, waxes, and sanitizes all hospital vehicles.
  • Operates snow removal equipment to remove snow from roads and sidewalks.
  • Secures worksite, equipment, and tools for patients’ safety.”

Office associate

Agency: Department of Human Services

Wage: $4,004 to $5,464 per month

Location: Alton

Minimum qualifications for this position include “knowledge, skill, and mental development” equivalent to the completion of high school, two years of office experience and the ability to type accurately at 45 words per minute, the listing says.

Job responsibilities include, according to the listing:

  • “Provides complex and confidential clerical services for the professional and paraprofessional staff on the forensic living unit (90%) and civil living unit (10%).
  • Establishes, updates, purges, and maintains confidential files for each patient on a forensic and civil living units.
  • Tracks information on each patient such as timeliness and legalities of materials received, completed, and distributed.
  • Gathers and organizes information for report preparation.”

Agency: Department of Children and Family Services

Wage: $9,300 to $11,300 per month anticipated starting pay

Location: East St. Louis

Minimum qualifications for this position include a master’s degree in social work or in a related human services field, in business administration or a juris doctorate, as well as four years of progressively responsible administrative child welfare experience with a master’s degree in social work or five years of progressively responsible administrative child welfare experience with a master’s degree in a related human services field, in business administration, or a juris doctorate, the listing says. Preferred qualifications also apply.

Job responsibilities include, according to the listing:

  • “Plans, develops, and oversees the administration and integration of comprehensive child welfare services for assigned areas within the region.
  • Maintains authority and accountability for system outcomes and continuity of care in designated areas.
  • Directs, coordinates, and reviews the activities of program personnel.
  • Provides extensive input into the formulation and development of policies and procedures for program services and directs their implementation within area of oversight.
  • Interacts with and coordinates community and field office support with the appropriate Area Administrators for Child Protection Services.
  • Advises the Regional Administrator of program needs, achievements, and problematic issues, developing strategies and proposals to address problem areas and enhance operations.
  • Drives or travels to various locations in the performance of duties.”

Wage: $19.56 per hour anticipated starting pay (up to $3,404 monthly, based on hours worked.)

Location: Prairie Du Rocher

Minimum qualifications for this position include “knowledge, skill and mental development” equivalent to the completion of eight years of elementary school, the listing says.

Job responsibilities include, according to the listing:

  • “Under immediate supervision and on a temporary basis not to exceed six months, assists site staff in the maintenance of grounds to create, clean, safe, and attractive public use areas during all weather conditions
  • Performs routine housekeeping duties
  • Assists Site Interpreters in delivering the site interpretive programs”

Minimum qualifications for this position include “knowledge, skill and mental development” equivalent to a minimum of an eighth grade education, according to the listing.

Job responsibilities include, the listing says:

  • “Explain events in detail to customers, in person, email and over the phone.
  • Sell targets/collect appropriate fees, make proper change, turn in the proper amount of revenue to manager.
  • Provide customers with proper number of coins/targets or loaded Promatic card, when needed.
  • Send/receive emails and assist with event staffing calls as directed by manager.
  • Complete daily report forms and daily clerical duties.
  • Perform Light housekeeping and stocking of supplies, as needed.
  • Perform other WSRC duties as assigned which are reasonably within scope of duties enumerated above.”
