If you’re considering a job in the public sector, the Illinois state government is hiring for more than 330 open positions statewide, including at least 45 in the metro-east.
Unemployment has seen a slight increase in Illinois recently, rising from 4.7% to 4.9% from December to January, the most recent months for which preliminary data is available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
From customer service jobs to positions in maintenance, there are a variety of listings available from the state. Here’s what to know about Illinois state government positions available in the metro-east. Four out of these five listings do not list a college degree as a requirement for applicants, although job experience may be required.
Maintenance equipment operator
Agency: Department of Human Services
Wage: $6,832 to $8,634 per month
Location: Alton

Minimum qualifications for this position include “knowledge, skill and mental development” equivalent to completion of high school and one year of experience performing a variety of semiskilled mechanical and manual tasks in the maintenance and operations of automotive or related maintenance equipment, the listing says.
Job responsibilities include, according to the listing:
- “Drives vehicles to transport forensic (95%) and civil (5%) patients to and from scheduled appointments, such as doctor visits, court appearance and drives discharged patients to specified discharge location.
- Operates truck and delivers food to both civil (25%) and forensic (75%) living units.
- Loads, unloads, and delivers equipment, general office supplies and personnel throughout the hospital grounds.
- Assists in the maintenance and minor repair of equipment.
- Washes, waxes, and sanitizes all hospital vehicles.
- Operates snow removal equipment to remove snow from roads and sidewalks.
- Secures worksite, equipment, and tools for patients’ safety.”

Minimum qualifications for this position include a master’s degree in social work or in a related human services field, in business administration or a juris doctorate, as well as four years of progressively responsible administrative child welfare experience with a master’s degree in social work or five years of progressively responsible administrative child welfare experience with a master’s degree in a related human services field, in business administration, or a juris doctorate, the listing says. Preferred qualifications also apply.
Job responsibilities include, according to the listing:
- “Plans, develops, and oversees the administration and integration of comprehensive child welfare services for assigned areas within the region.
- Maintains authority and accountability for system outcomes and continuity of care in designated areas.
- Directs, coordinates, and reviews the activities of program personnel.
