Authorities release ID of man killed on railroad tracks near Troy
The Madison County Coroner’s Office identified the man struck and killed by a train in Troy Saturday night.
According to a release from the sheriff’s department, the unhoused man was 56-year-old Lonnie L. Dickerson.
The incident occurred on railroad tracks in Jarvis Township to the east of Lockman Road and Longhi Road, a release said. Capt. Matt Werner with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office marked the incident’s time at approximately 10:20 p.m. A coroner’s office release says 9-1-1 was called at approximately 11:18 p.m.
According to the release, Dickerson may have been sleeping on the tracks. Werner said the train’s onboard video showed that when the train sounded its horn the individual later identified as Dickerson attempted to stand, but ultimately did not clear the tracks in time.
Dickerson was pronounced dead by the coroner’s office at 12:02 a.m. Sunday, according to the coroner’s release.
Dickerson’s preliminary cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head and abdomen. A final cause of death won’t be determined, however, until toxicology tests are completed.
The Troy and Glen Carbon Fire Protection Districts also responded to the scene Saturday night, according to the release.
Dickerson’s funeral arrangements are pending with Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River.
