Man identified in fatal I-64 semitrailer crash near O’Fallon

A 35-year-old man was identified as the person killed Friday morning after he was hit by a semitrailer truck while walking on Interstate 64.

Ethan D. Wood, whose last known address was on Waterford Lane in Glen Carbon, was pronounced dead at the scene about 7:15 a.m., St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said.

According to Illinois State Police, Wood was walking in the westbound lanes near mile marker 14 near O’Fallon about 6:30 a.m. when he was hit.

Dye said Wood was not carrying identification and had to be identified through fingerprints.

Traffic on I-64 backed up for miles as two westbound lanes were closed while authorities investigated. All lanes reopened by 9:20 a.m., state police said.

Illinois State Police are investigating.
