The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Friday that St. Clair County has more than a dozen ongoing or upcoming construction projects planned on state-maintained roads, including work expected to extend through 2028.

The projects include adding lanes on Interstate 64 in O’Fallon, expanding Air Mobility Drive near Mascoutah and a nine-day closure of westbound I-64 later this summer.

“Because of the work we’ve done in the General Assembly, IDOT is investing nearly $850 million in the metro-east — and that’s just on projects that are currently running,” Assistant House Majority Leader Jay Hoffman said in a statement. “That number alone cannot quantify the positive impact on families, communities and union labor involved with getting these projects out the door.”

The metro-east construction is part of the statewide Rebuild Illinois program, passed in 2019 to address a backlog of deferred maintenance on state roads.

The $44.8 billion program is the first multiyear capital plan for Illinois since 2009, aimed at improving infrastructure in every county in the state. The program began in 2020 as a six-year effort, but Illinois Department of Transportation spokesperson Paul Wappel said it’s a revolving program with current projects expected to continue through 2028.

The Rebuild Illinois projects in St. Clair County are expected to cost nearly $345 million.
