Thousands across the metro-east were without power during Fourth of July storms, including residents of senior apartments in Cahokia Heights.

Just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Ameren Illinois reported these power outages in each county:

  • 2,849 customers in Monroe County
  • 2,013 in St. Clair County
  • 1,893 in Madison County
  • 52 in Randolph County

Residents of the Touchette Elderly Apartments in Cahokia Heights were among those affected, according to the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency. The apartments serve residents who are 62 and older.

“Emergency crews (are) on scene to assist those needing to be relocated,” the agency stated in a post on social media just before 5 p.m.

An Ameren Illinois spokesperson confirmed the outages are storm-related, with downed trees falling on power lines. The region was under a severe thunderstorm watch and extreme heat warning for the holiday.

“High winds and severe weather caused widespread outages across multiple communities in Missouri and Illinois,” Ameren wrote in an update on its outage map. “Restoration work is underway, and crews are working across affected areas to restore service as safely and efficiently as possible. Estimated restoration times will be posted as they become available.”
