Man killed in South St. Louis crash identified as metro-east resident

A motorcyclist killed in a South St. Louis crash was identified as a metro-east man Tuesday.

Matthew Middeke, 48, of New Baden, died when his motorcycle and an SUV collided in the 2500 block of Lemay Ferry Road at about 7:17 a.m. Monday, St. Louis County police said.

Investigators said the motorcyclist was traveling north when a southbound vehicle making a left turn into a business parking lot struck the motorcycle.

Middeke was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead, police said. The driver of the vehicle was not hurt, remained at the scene and is cooperating, according to a police department release.

Middeke was the son of Raphael H. “Rafe” Middeke, a former Catholic priest and longtime editor of The Messenger, the newspaper of the Catholic Diocese of Belleville. The senior Middeke died June 3 at at 92.
