A stretch of eastbound Interstate 64 will be closed indefinitely near the Mascoutah exit while police investigate a crash, according to an announcement from Illinois State Police.

A Facebook post from Illinois State Police Troop 8 said the interstate will remain closed between Illinois Routes 4 and 161 at the crash site near the Mascoutah rest area. The post said the department expects “extended closure” and urged drivers to take an alternate route.

Department spokesperson Trooper Ryan Wagand said traffic is currently being diverted to Illinois Route 4.

Wagand told the Belleville News-Democrat that a three-car crash occurred at about 12:08 p.m. Wednesday near milepost 25 on the interstate.

He said at least two occupants were transported to a local hospital with injuries.
