Police are advising motorists to avoid the area of Illinois 159 and U.S. 50 in Fairview Heights Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Traffic in the area is extremely congested because a semi truck knocked down power lines and poles in the area. The damage has knocked traffic lights out of service, bringing traffic at intersections in the area to a crawl.

Ameren spokesman Brian Bretsch said the truck seriously damaged at least three power poles.

“The damage is serious enough that all three poles are going to have to be replaced,” Bretsch said. “It looks like that is going to take at least until midnight to fix.”

Bretsch said the damage has only left about a dozen customers without electricity. All of those are businesses. No residential customers are affected, he said.

A semi truck that tried to avoid the snarled traffic by driving down St. Clair Drive in Fairview Heights ended up snagging traffic lines and causing more road closures including a portion of South Ruby Lane.
