A Madison County teenager is recovering from a horrific single-car accident.

Christian Shelton, 18, was driving at about 7:45 Monday morning on Buchta Road near Bethalto when his car left the roadway, went down an embankment and ended up in a small creek.

The force of the crash tore Shelton’s car into several pieces and left him unconscious, hanging upside down in the vehicle.

Shelton, according to rescuers, regained consciousness after about 45 minutes and called for help. He is expected to recover from injuries suffered in the accident.

The site is a frequent location for crashes. In 2013 a Roxana high school student was killed there.
