A bicyclist was in serious condition Wednesday night after he was struck by a motorist east of Belleville.
According to Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye Jr., the bicyclist was eastbound on Illinois 161 at Radio Range Road shortly after 6 p.m. when he was struck by a white Chevrolet passenger car. Dye said the driver of the car was making a left turn to head south on Radio Range Road and struck the bicyclist, who came off his bike and hit the car’s windshield.
Dye said the driver, a 51-year-old Belleville woman, told troopers her visibility was reduced due to the glare of the sun. She was issued a citation for failing to reduce speed to avoid the collision.
The bicyclist, a 30-year-old man from Belleville, was transported to an area hospital with multiple injuries and was in serious condition as of 7:30 p.m., Dye said. Dye said the driver of the car told troopers at the scene she did not see the bicyclist wearing a helmet.
