Part of U.S. 50 to be dedicated to fallen Breese serviceman
Illinois National Guard Staff Sgt. Joshua Melton, who died while serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan, will have a section of new U.S. 50 named in his honor.
New U.S. 50 from Carlyle to Breese is scheduled to be dedicated as the SSG Joshua Melton Memorial Highway during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Breese soccer field off Holy Crose Lane.
Melton joined the national guard a year before graduating from Central Community High School in Breese. He served in Iraq from December 2004 to March 2006. He was killed while serving in Afghanistan in June 2009.
The SSG Joshua Melton Memorial Highway is being designated after the General Assembly adopted a joint resolution sponsored by state Rep. Charlie Meier, R-Okawville, and state Sen. Kyle McCarter, R-Lebanon.
