Indiana man identified as body found in river Monday

Madison County officials have identified the man who apparently drowned in the Mississippi River while fishing Monday.

Todd E. Brooks, 42, of Evansville, Indiana, was found near the Cahokia Creek Diversion Canal about 11:46 a.m. Monday. Hartford police and fire departments, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Team Watters Sonar recovered the body after about 10 minutes, and Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brooks had been in the area visiting relatives, according to the Madison County Coroner’s Office. He had gone fishing, but a friend became suspicious when he noticed Brooks was missing, though his truck was still there and his fishing gear was still in place. Police had conducted a search, and sonar had located his body submerged in water below a spillway in the canal.

Initial results from an autopsy conducted Tuesday did not indicate foul play, although routine toxicology testing will take place. The death remains under investigation by Hartford Police and the coroner’s office.

Funeral arrangements were pending.
