NAACP banquet to be held Sunday

The NAACP will hold its 61st American Freedom Fund Awards Banquet on Sunday at the downtown St. Louis Marriott Grand Hotel on Washington Avenue.

Tickets are available at the door and cost $65 each.

Stanley Franklin, president of the local East St. Louis branch of the NAACP said the VIP reception starts at 4:30 p.m. and the doors to the public open at 5:30 p.m. with the award program to start at 6 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Pursuing Liberty in the Face of Injustice. The keynote speaker will be the winner of the James Lewis Essay Contest, which is a high school student.

Franklin said 17 awards will be given out. An award titled “Game Changer” goes to the individual deemed by NAACP to be one of the most progressive metro-east leaders. Also a community service award, a lifetime achievement award and the Medgar Evans award will be given out. The NAACP is also presenting the Charles Lawson scholarship to several individuals.
